EnglishTour Overview
Ecuador is a fantastic place to climb and a great travel destination in its own right. With a diversity of vegetation zones, from the tropical equatorial jungle to the high alpine plateau, Ecuador is dotted with majestic snow-capped volcanoes rising to over 6000m. To appreciate these remarkable contrasts we climb a range of peaks (Cotopaxi, Illiniza Norte, etc), culminating in an attempt on Ecuador's highest peak, Chimborazo. Under the guidance of our mountain guides we undertake glacier training and practice and develop the skills needed for the bigger peaks. Providing you have an excellent level of fitness this trip is suitable for experienced trekkers that are keen to go a step further and climb their first 6000m peak. Visits to the Otavalo market, Quito and the beautiful Quilotoa Lake ensure this expedition is more than just mountains but a complete Ecuadorian experience.

Our city tour starts around 9am and we will visit the Panecillo, a small hill crowned with the statue of the Virgin of Quito or Virgin of Legarda, overlooking the colonial village of San Francisco de Quito, the Plaza de la Independencia, we will see the typical architecture of the colonial houses and the interesting names of the streets. Both lines are only 200m apart. We can also visit the Ethnographic Museum or for those who are interested, there is the option of the Inti-Nan Museum, showing some physical laws related to gravity and its influence and the astronomical knowledge of the Aboriginal Pre-Inca and Inca groups.

Day 3 : Drive To The Northern Province Of Imbabura, Visit Otavalo Market, And Afternoon Acclimatisation Walk To Laguna Cuicocha
Today we will leave Quito, and drive north through beautiful Andean countryside to the famous market town of Otavalo. The markets here date from Pre-Incan times, when people came from jungle areas to trade their produce with those of the highlands. This is still the case today, as well as being many crafts and wares for tourists. It is considered by many to be one of the best markets for textiles and crafts in South America. In the afternoon we will undertake a 3-hour acclimatisation hike to Laguna Cuicocha - a crater lake at the foot of Cotacachi Volcano.

We will start our summit ascent of Mt Cotopaxi around midnight. You will only need to carry the gear and food you require for the climb and the rest of your luggage can be left at the refuge. It will take us approximately 5-7 hours to the summit, dependent on weather conditions. At the beginning the path is rocky until we reach the edge of the glacier. From this point on we will use our crampons and continue on the snow and part of the glacier until we reach the summit. The descent from the summit to the refuge takes around 3 to 4 hours. After our descent, we will be transferred to our hotel in Lasso.

Along the rim of the crater, an array of viewpoints awaits, offering us captivating vistas that showcase the beauty of this region's unique landscape. In the afternoon we will also enjoy a guided visit to the nearby Quilotoa indigenous community.

Our climb to the highest mountain in Ecuador starts before midnight (approximately 11pm). The trek is rocky for the first hour. When we reach the glacier, we will put on our crampons and continue through cracks and steep slopes with strong winds until we reach the summit. The level of ascent ranges from moderate to demanding as some of the slopes are exremely steep. The summit crater area is vast and normally covered in its entirety either in soft snow or penitentes. The climb to the summit can take 6-9 hours and the descent back to the refuge about 4 hours. This is a very long day which includes some ice ramps, snow bridges and sections of icefall and it’s essential to have a very good fitness level. Depending on the time and weather, we either stay another night at the refuge or drive to Banos.

Accommodation
10 nights hotel
Basic accommodation in mountain huts in the National Parks. The huts are bunk style accommodation with 4 or more people and shared bathroom facilities. The atmosphere in the huts is convivial and friendly and is part of the experience when trekking in Ecuador. Most of the hotels and lodges we use in cities can be described as 3 star accommodation. In smaller towns and villages hotel options are often limited and we might have to use more basic accommodation with a lower or without star rating. Please note that the star rating in South America is very fluid and can’t be compared to a western standard star rating, however you can be assured of clean, comfortable and well located lodgings.
What You Carry
In your daypack you will need to carry extra warm clothing (depending on the altitude, location and weather), a rain jacket, water bottle, camera gear, valuables and personal items such as sunscreen, lip-eze etc. On the days spent mountaineering, you will also need to carry your climbing equipment (crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, etc). On some days of the trek you will need to carry a full pack including climbing equipment, clothes, sleeping bag, personal items, etc (please see trip notes for details). A personal guide can be hired for the summit ascents. This guide will not carry your gear but will walk with you at your own pace. This can be beneficial if you think you might be slower or faster than the rest of the group.
Grading
Participants should be competent and self sufficient in the outdoors and have experience in multi day trekking at altitude. Prior experience on an entry level mountaineering expedition is highly recommended. The terrain will involve low to moderate angle snow slopes and traveling on crevassed glaciers and few snow/icy slopes. Experience using ice axe and crampons is preferred but not essential. Please see the 'Am I Suitable' and 'Physical Requirements' paragraphs in this document for further details.

Check out our Q&As
-
Who will be my travelling companions on the tour?
We have offices on three continents which means your travelling companions will be just that – international and wonderfully eclectic. Part of small group travel means that although travellers come from various locations and backgrounds, you will be travelling with like-minded companions who, like you, are keen to share the experience and forge lifelong friendships.
-
What about environmental impact?
We believe that adventure travel revolves around establishing a strong relationship with the people and environments in which we operate. Our responsible travel policies have been carefully developed to ensure that we minimise the impact of our presence and help to protect the regions we visit while contributing positively to the local community.
-
What should I pack?
Your pre-departure documents include a detailed packing list with items that you need to bring. While most of the equipment for daily activities is included in your tour cost, some items like helmets and hiking boots are best brought from home. The pre-departure documents also include information on layering and recommended brands for various items to ensure you are fully prepared for your trip.
-
Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?
Yes. World Expeditions does not require single travellers to pay a surcharge for travelling alone on the vast majority of our trips. Our holidays are primarily on a twin share basis, so if you are joining the group as a solo traveller, we will match you with someone of your own gender. The choice is yours however; if you prefer not to share, we do offer single supplements for private occupancy.
-
Are tips included in my trip price?
Tips are not included in the tour cost. Tipping is a personal thing, do not worry about how much, or when, to tip. Tipping guidelines are provided for certain destinations in our pre departure information upon booking, however the best advice will be provided by your tour leader.
-
Am I suited to small-group travel?
We recognise that many of our travellers have not been on a ‘group trip’ before. Yet what our departures provide is both structure and flexibility, allowing you plenty of freedom within the framework of the itinerary. You’ll find that with our maximum group size at 16, you’ll travel in a minimal impact style with a great group of like-minded travellers.
-
Can you advise which vaccinations are recommended?
While our pre-departure kit provides information on vaccinations, we suggest that you consult your doctor, local government inoculation centre or a travel medical specialist in order to get the most current advice regarding vaccination requirements.
