Tour Overview
Upper Mustang trek winds its way to the last forbidden Kingdom of Nepal, also known as Lo- Manthang. This remote trans-Himalayan mountain region borders Tibet and has a distinct Tibetan feel to it, both in its people and Tibetan culture and in its arid landscape of high cliffs and rocks of unusual formations and colors. Upper Mustang trek explores Kagbeni, the main gateway to Upper Mustang, then on through a stark landscape in the rain shadow of the Mount Dhaulagiri massif to Lo-Manthang, the seat of past Kings (Mustang King) of the Kingdom of Lo. Visit more than 100 years old caves, rock paintings, monasteries, and gompa and learn something about the culture of this region. Stunning views of mt. Nilgiri, mt. Annapurna, mt. Dhaulagiri and other Himalayan peaks are exciting in this trek. In Lo Manthang itself a explore to Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar, the last main village in the northwest of the region, as well as the Lo-Manthang King’s palace, brings a further cultural understanding of the mustang area. In the Lo-Manthang also an Amchi (traditional Tibetan doctor) museum and school, we can learn about this ancient healing art and how it is starting adapted to meet modern-day situations. Three hours’ hike from Lo Manthang is Gyakar with its very famous Gompa in Mustang valley as well. The Gompa is over 1,200 years old, is dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, who visit these areas at that time. The Gyakar Gompa is famous for its rock paintings, and it is believed that if you make a wish here, it will come true. You can make a wish at the Ghar Gompa, and hope to return again one day! The Mustang Valley trek is a relatively high altitude (3,500m to 3,800m), which is somehow intensified by the very dry winds. While you trekking in this region it is no problem for those born at this altitude to trek at speed, travelers will be more leisurely in their trek to avoid any altitude related problems. On average trekking takes place from 5-6 hours a day and some paths are particularly very windy and dusty. Mostly windy is starting after 10 am. Moreover, the Upper Mustang trek into the restricted area of Upper Mustang, which in part follows the ancient salt trail, is something that will remain in one’s memory lifetime. Overall Upper Mustang trek is a moderate level trekking and the best way to visit the unique cultures and traditions of upper mustang and the natural beauty of the Himalayan landscape in Annapurna region.
