Essence of the Jungle (On Request)

After you land at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, a tour representative will pick you up at the scheduled time. After greeting you, he’ll take you to the transportation service that will transfer you to your hotel. As you will soon discover, Lima, the capital of Peru, is a modern metropolis brimming with culture and history. The city is currently undergoing an exciting series of cultural and economic changes. After checking in at your hotel, spend the rest of the first day at your leisure, be that making the most of the services available at the hotel or by heading out to start exploring the fascinating streets of Lima at your own rhythm.

Overnight in Lima.

After breakfast at the hotel, a vehicle will pick you up to transfer you to the airport where you’ll board a quick flight to Tarapoto (Lima-Tarapoto flight is not included; we recommend booking a flight that departs before 10am). This city, located in the north-eastern jungles of Peru, is known for its cultural traditions and excellent cuisine. Transportation will wait for you at the airport to take you to the Pumarinri Amazon Lodge, located in a beautiful natural landscape where you will spend the night surrounded by the forest in the company of the soft sound of water running down the Huallaga River.

Overnight in Tarapoto.

Wake up to breakfast at the hotel before heading out to discover the wonderful world of cocoa. In the morning you will be taken to visit Chazuta, also known known as the ‘Chocolate Jungle’, to see where cocoa beans are grown. The people who live here have a strong cultural identity and a history that goes so far back their ancient pottery can be seen preserved in the Wasichay workshop and museum of traditional ceramics. There, local artisans continue to create pottery using the same ancient techniques their ancestors used. Later, return to the hotel for lunch before setting out on the second adventure of the day, which involves the discovery of a very different but equally popular local product: the coca leaf. The 'Ruta de la Coca' is an interesting, educational trek along which you will learn how the coca leaf is processed and will even visit a coca leaf maceration pond. Return to the hotel for dinner.

Overnight in Tarapoto.

Today breakfast at the hotel is followed by yet another exploration of one of Tarapoto’s staple products: coffee. Become acquainted with the origins of the world’s favourite stimulant at the quaint town of Mushuk Lamas. To get there, you will first undertake a leisurely hike along the slopes that skirt the magnificent Huallaga River. Enjoy this relaxing journey through nature and forget all about the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life. Then, as you near Mushuk Lamas, you will appreciate the coffee plantations dominating the landscape. This product is considered the best of Peru. If you are travelling between February and May, which is the harvest period, you’ll be amazed by the intense red colour of the grain, which stands out in stark contrast to the surrounding greenery of the jungle. After visiting the plantation, you’ll go back to the hotel for dinner.

Overnight in Tarapoto.

Begin your last day in the jungle with breakfast at the hotel, which you will certainly need to charge your batteries for today’s journey to the waterfalls of Pucayaquillo. Hike along a 1.8-kilometre-long trail and along the way admire the wide variety of local plants, trees and animals that thrive exuberantly in this jungle. If you look carefully, you can spot a great many beautiful frogs and even Isulas ants, known for their eerily large size. Upon arrival, rest at the foot of the waterfall or cool off in its crystal-clear waters. Then soak in the overwhelming majesty of the bush and feel yourself become one with nature. For the way back, a vehicle will be waiting to take you to the airport, where you’ll catch a flight back to Lima. Once in the capital, you will be transferred to your hotel for a well-deserved sleep.

After waking up to one last breakfast at the hotel, a vehicle will be ready to accompany you to the airport, where you will board your onward flight. Although this is the last day of your journey through Peru, we hope that your memories of this remarkable adventure will last a lifetime.
