Itinerary

Day 5 : Transfer To Montenegro-Bosnia Border Via Durmitor; Drive To Sarajevo

We transfer (approximately two to three hours) to the Montenegro-Bosnia border, via Durmitor's interior with its impressive peaks, isolated mountain lakes and deep canyons. The mountain roads are narrow and we meet the occasional shepherd with his sheep moving up to the higher grassy pastures of Durmitor. This seasonal migration has taken place for centuries and is very much part of Montenegrin culture, even today.

We drive to Brod na Drini, where we stop for lunch at a restaurant with views overlooking the Drina River. After lunch, we continue our journey through the remote and mountainous eastern region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, making our way to Sarajevo.

Food

Breakfast in Bosnia and across the Balkans usually consists of bread and pastries, dairy products such as yoghurt and cheese, cereal, eggs cooked in a variety of ways, smoked meats, honey, tea and coffee, milk and juices.

Typical Bosnian cuisine consists of ingredients such as tomatoes, potatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, cucumbers, mushrooms, spinach, beans and dairy products such as milk, cheese, pavlaka (sour cream) and kajmak (similar to clotted cream). Meat dishes usually consist of beef and lamb and specialities include cevapi, burek, dolma (stuffed vegetables with meat) and goulash. Desserts often have an Eastern influence with baklava being very popular. The alcoholic drink rakija, made from apples or plums, is common in this region also.

Vegetarian and special diets can be catered for, but options are limited throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Please advise of any specific dietary requirements at time of booking.

Accommodation

We spend 10 nights in hotels, most of which are well located for our adventures. Below are the usual accommodations used; however, there may be some departures where groups stay at similar hotels of the same standard and quality.

Kotor: Hotel Porto In (nights 1-2)

Just a two-minute walk from the Unesco-listed old town, this 17-room hotel is ideally located for our time in Kotor. There’s also a small beach 655ft (200m) from the front door. The hotel itself has a 50-seat restaurant and bar, serving a mix of national and international cuisines.

Zabljak: Hotel Zabljak (nights 3-4)

A grand, angular design and modern Scandi-style rooms make Hotel Zabljak stand out. But it’s the mountain views that may be the lasting memory. For an additional cost, there’s access to a wellness centre with a gym and hot tub.

Sarajevo: Hotel Cosmopolit (nights 5-7)

In the heart of the city, Hotel Cosmopolit is well located for our adventure, just a short walk from the Miljacka river. It’s a bright, modern property often praised for its cleanliness and welcoming staff.

Mostar: Hotel Kapetanovina (nights 8-9)

Our two-night stay at Kapetanovina means we’re only a three-minute walk from the star attraction in town: the Old Bridge of Mostar. The rooms are modern and have a colour scheme inspired by the Neretva River.

Dubrovnik: Hotel Komodor (night 10)

Our final night is spent at Hotel Komodor, a three-star beachside property. It has 113 rooms, which are split between the main building and an annex. There’s a terrace with a pool and sun loungers too, plus the seaside promenade is just a five-minute walk away.

Worth knowing

Tourism is still developing in the Balkans – one of the reasons it’s ideal for adventurous travellers. We have seen increased investment in infrastructure over the years, but there is a difference in quality between some of the city hotels and the more rustic hotels and pensions in the smaller towns.

Reviews from travellers on this tour

Great trip!

A very enjoyable trip with lots to do and a full and varied itinerary. This was our fifth Exodus trip and once again we had a great group with a mix of ages and nationalities. Organisation was excellent and you'll get to see a lot of the Balkans.

Beguiled by Bosnia

This holiday gave a great taste of 3 Balkan countries, breath-taking scenery, attractive towns and villages and sobering insights into the past suffered there, particularly Bosnia. A variety of sites, history and experiences were included which made the trip really interesting. The only downside was the over-popularity of Dubrovnik at the end of the trip

Bosnia visited

I was hoping to understand more about the recent war in Bosnia. I didn't learn much except that this is an extraordinarily complicated place the crossroads of Europe geographically and historically, that nationalism is toxic, and that efforts by internationalbodies such as the UN were incapable of preventing war and even genocide if one of the combatants decide on a course of action.

Fantastic scenery and wonderful people

Bosnia Herzegovina is a truly amazing country. The cities, scenery and people were all wonderful. I had been looking at doing this tour for some time as I had heard good reports about Sarajevo as a cosmopolitan city with friendly people. I also thought the scenery would be good. My expectations on both were exceeded !

MONTENEGRO, BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

Fantastically well organised trip with excellent local guides.

A fabulous trip - full of variety

A superb trip with great variety - coastal scenery, mountains, rivers, lakes, canyons, the city of Sarajevo, and then all the history, culture and peoples of the Balkans. It was a very easy trip with comfortable travel, unhurried and yet lots seen and done. I really enjoyed travelling with the group - always someone to go out with for meals or a drink and yet plenty of time to do your own exploring.

Great mix of scenery and culture

This is a good combination of interesting cities and mountains ,with a reasonable pace and comfortable air-conditioned bus;our guide and driver were excellent, with reasonable accommodation and generous meals throughout.

Bosnia and Beyond

I have just completed this Exodus tour of the Balkans, and I rate it amongst the best well rounded tours I have experienced. The itinerary was excellent. The bus and accommodations were very good. There was a very good balance of road time through breathtaking countryside, to walks, hiking and group meals experiencing local foods, to free time. Our driver was safety conscious. I would sign up for an Exodus tour again without hesitation.

An interesting tour of the Balkans

This is a very interesting and varied trip through Montenegro and Bosnia Herzogovina, covering countryside, mountains, culture and history. A lot is fitted into a relatively short time, so it involves quite a bit of travelling, but the countryside is stunning and our driver was excellent, so it was really worth it. The mountains are reminiscent of the Dolomites, but without the crowds. The cities are medieval and very quaint, but still bear the scars of the Balkan war of the 90's. The war exhibition in Sarajevo is particularly thought provoking and well worth a visit.

When things go wrong

I enjoyed the mix if this trip. Old walled towns, wonderful coastline, and flower meadows as you like to think they were in the UK in the past. Even the coach journeys through the countryside were worth the time spent doing them.
